Mohinder Singh Sehmi, born in Eldoret on 4 July 1938, was a truly outstanding and remarkable man. He was humble and unselfish, he was dedicated and kind, he was loving yet strong and charismatic, and he was a perfectionist in everything he undertook. He was firstly, a good son. When Mohinder was only four years old he lost his mother, and his father, Hari Singh had to care for their two sons on his own; not an easy task for his father and not easy for both Naginder and Mohinder. Secondly, he was a loving and caring husband. Mohinder married Amrit Kaur Ranauta, also of Eldoret, in March 1958. From small beginnings they became a happy couple living in a house they built themselves out of hard earned savings. Mohinder was, thirdly, a loving and caring father; he and Amrit raised 3 sons. Rajinder was born in January 1959, and now lives with his family in Nairobi. Harminder was born in March 1962 and lives in Abingdon, England with his family. Ravinder was born in February 1969, and recently moved to Melbourne, Australia with his family where he now lives. All are successful in their various occupations and have married wonderful wives, namely Tajinder, Bapinder and Rita. They all came to Mohinder and Amrit when they learned how ill he was. Latterly, Mohinder was a loving and affectionate grandfather to five delightful grand children. As a brother, Mohinder had a unique and very special relationship with Naginder. They were inseparable from the time they were very young. When Naginder's wife died, Mohinder and Amrit were pillars of strength and helped through this most difficult time. Naginder, Jasmeet and Amita especially came from Geneva, Switzerland to give their love and support and strength to Mohinder, Amrit and the family. The same high standards were evident in whatever Mohinder did, whether as a student, a professional, a sportsman, a businessman, a colleague or a friend. He never compromised his principles and his honesty and kindness meant he cared for others more than for himself. "I remember him as having prefect manners, both on and off the court" wrote a tennis-playing friend. As a student he struggled, at his own expense, to qualify as an ACCA Accountant, while still working full-time and raising one child. He rose from an Acounts Clerk in 1957 to Finance Director with East African Tanning Extract Co Ltd. In 1990 and in partnership with Thomas Bore, Mohinder started his own well respected firm of accountants, Bore and Associates. Mohinder was Chairman or Committee Member of numerous organisations such as Lions International (Chairman), Gurugwara Singh Sabha (Trustee), Shamshan Bhumi (Chairman), Eldoret Club (Golf Captain, Auditor), Gulab Lochab Academy (Committee Member) and many others. His achievements and respect he commanded were legendary. This is exemplified by the fact that he served for over 20 years as Chairman of the Eldoret sikh Union. As a Freemason and as a Lion, he was totally committed and was held in high esteem by all those who knew him, achieving a very high rank, that of a Grand Officer in one of the masonic orders. His organising ability endeared him to all, and he was often asked to be spokesman at functions. His sporting achievements were numerous, especially at hockey where he played against international teams such as India and Pakistan. He was also an all-round ball player, be it tennis, badminton, and golf with equal flair. He was a member of the Kenya Golfing Society and Senior Golfing Society. He loved a good game of cards. As a friend he was unequalled. His sense of humour and concern for others, particularly in times of sorrow or hardship, were well known. Mohinder will be greatly missed by many who relied on him for counsel and advice, which he gave unstintingly. His friends came from all walks of life and from all communities. Finally, as a patient, he was truly remarkable. When Rajinder told him of the diagnosis of cancer, he remained composed and mentally strong, as he did throughout the course of his illness, right to the end. Our prayers and thoughts are with Amrit today as she has begun a new life without Mohinder at her side. She has been strong and so devoted and caring during Mohinder's illness. May she have the health and strength to continue to look after her family. |
